Shopify gives you excellent numbers about your own store and nothing at all about anyone else's. Your dashboard cannot tell you that the shop ranking above you cut its price 12% on Friday. That gap is what competitor price monitoring fills.
Do you need a Shopify app for it?
No. Price monitoring watches pages that are not yours, so it does not need access to your store at all. An app is only necessary if you want prices pushed back into your catalogue automatically. For monitoring and alerting, an external tool with no store permissions is simpler and safer — it never touches your products, orders, or customer data.
A setup that takes about thirty minutes
- Export your products by revenue. In Shopify, open Analytics → Reports → Sales by product, sort by revenue, and take the top 20.
- Find each product at two or three competitors. Search the exact product name plus the brand. Copy the product page URLs into a sheet next to your own price.
- Load the URLs into a monitoring tool. Paste them in; the tool reads the current price and starts building history from that moment.
- Set one alert threshold. Something like 3% keeps rounding noise and currency wobble out of your inbox.
- Give it two weeks before acting. The first fortnight tells you who discounts constantly and who holds a stable price. That pattern is more valuable than any single alert.
Repricing rules that protect your margin
Matching every competitor drop is a race to zero, and on Shopify you rarely win it against marketplace sellers with lower overheads. Better rules:
- Set a floor per product based on cost plus your minimum acceptable margin, and never go below it, whatever a competitor does.
- Ignore promotions shorter than 72 hours. Price history tells you which drops are temporary.
- Compete on the total offer. Free shipping, bundles, faster delivery, and a longer return window all beat a two-percent price cut on margin.
- Reprice upwards too. When the market moves up and you do not, you are donating margin.
What good looks like after a month
You should be able to answer three questions instantly: which of my products are currently priced above the market, which competitor discounts most aggressively, and what a typical price for my bestseller has been over the last 30 days. If your setup answers those without you opening a spreadsheet, it is working.
PricePulse handles the checking side of this — hourly checks, history charts, and email alerts on any public product URL, from €2.99/month with a 7-day free trial.
